Cornelius Engelmann is a Consultant Hepatologist and Professor of Translational Hepatology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where he also leads a research group within the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology. He completed his PhD at University College London (UCL), focusing on novel therapeutic approaches and translational aspects of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and alcohol-related liver disease, and holds a medical degree (MD) from University of Leipzig. His current research focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of liver cirrhosis and alcohol-related liver disease, as well as the development of innovative therapies for ACLF. His work is supported by major national and international funding bodies, including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung, and the European Union Horizon 2020 programme.
He serves as an Honorary Lecturer at UCL and has played a role in the development of national guidelines on liver transplantation and cirrhosis. In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he serves as Associate Editor in the BBJ section of Journal of Hepatology and is a member of the scientific boards of the HepNet Symposium and the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). He is also a member of the ACLF Steering Committee within the Forum for Collaborative Research and serves on the Inspiring and Writing Board of EF-CLIF.
