EASL Endorsed Consortia
About
EASL Endorsed Consortia are independent, collaborative research networks of clinical and biomedical centres dedicated to advancing hepatology.
Through endorsement, EASL recognises the scientific merit and strategic value of each consortium, supporting their visibility and ability to engage funders, industry, and the wider hepatology community — while each consortium retains full autonomy over its own governance, funding, and research activities.
Aim
- Build critical mass around specific liver disease topics by bringing together multidisciplinary expertise from across Europe and beyond
- Foster collaboration between basic and clinical research to accelerate translation of scientific discovery into patient benefit
- Identify emerging research priorities and create synergies between member groups, as well as with industry and other external partners
- Design and coordinate multi-annual research programmes, including calls for research proposals open to member centres on a voluntary basis
- Support fundraising from public agencies, foundations, and industry to sustain approved research activities
- Stimulate the development of new research groups and create pathways for young investigators to enter and grow within the field
EASL Baveno Consortium
The mission of the Baveno Cooperation is to advance knowledge in the field of advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) and portal hypertension (PH) with the ultimate goal to improve outcomes of patients with ACLD and PH.

Research focus
Advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD), traditionally termed cirrhosis. Portal Hypertension, particularly clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) and its complications.
Current research projects
The EASL BAVENO Consortium has several active research projects and studies that are summarised on the BAVENO website (free registration as a member required).

European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma
European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma (ENS-CCA) is a network of active researchers with a broad interest in CCA, and biliary tract cancer in general, which have significantly contributed to the study into the pathophysiology of the biliary tree and development/onset of CCA, pursuing basic, translational and clinical research in an effort to identify treatment options with successful outcome for this type of cancer. For years, our laboratories have generated, together with our colleagues, many of the key advances in this field. ENS-CCA include research groups located in 15 European countries with interest in CCA from Basic, Translational and Clinical research.

Coordinator
EASL-CLIF Consortium
The EASL-CLIF Consortium, coordinated by the European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF CLIF) — a non-profit research organization that provides operational support and infrastructure for the Consortium — brings together 120 hospitals across Europe to conduct research on liver disease and generate evidence that improves patient care and clinical guidelines. Through large collaborative studies and new initiatives, the network also trains the next generation of researchers and provides unique career development opportunities for emerging leaders in the field.

Milestones
The PREDICT study – a prospective investigation of new events that occurred by 3 months after admission for acute decompensation of cirrhosis without ACLF – revealed three distinct trajectories of acute decompensation of cirrhosis, including pre-ACLF (defining patients who are frequently readmitted and eventually develop ACLF within days or weeks after admission and frequently die), unstable decompensated cirrhosis (defining patients who develop complications related to portal hypertension but not ACLF and die less often that pre-ACLF patients) and stable decompensated cirrhosis (defining patients who are discharged rapidly and remain free of readmission during the 3-month follow-up).

EASL Consortium for Regenerative Hepatology
The EASL Consortium for Regenerative Hepatology is aimed at the delivery of bioengineered tissues and associated biotechnologies for regenerative hepatology.
The Consortium is a multidisciplinary European-based organisation including individual research groups or established centers willing to join efforts to achieve common goals and fosters the acquisition of financial resources to support the activity of the Consortium.

SALVE Consortium
SALVE (Study of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease in Europe) is a multi-centre research consortium uniting leading hepatologists, pathologists, and clinical researchers from across Europe.
Our mission is to improve outcomes for patients with alcohol-related liver disease through collaborative research into natural history, pathogenesis, biomarker development, and novel therapeutic approaches. By pooling clinical data and expertise across borders, we aim to accelerate discoveries that translate into better patient care.

Research focus
The main focus of the consortium is to better understand the natural history of alcohol-related liver disease. The SALVE histopathology group aims to better characterise histological characteristics and prognosis markers in alcohol-related liver disease

VALDIG Consortium
VALDIG (Vascular Liver Disease Group) is a independent network of researchers with a common interest in Vascular Liver Diseases.
The aim of this network is to foster research in this field.
All VALDIG centres are connected by one database, which allows for the coordination of joint research projects.
In addition, VALDIG is supporting the establishment of new research groups to provide young researchers with the opportunity for interaction and knowledge building.
