History

Founded on 23 April 1966 in Marburg, Germany, EASL began as a meeting of 70 hepatologists brought together by Prof. Gustav-Adolf Martini to promote international collaboration in liver research. Inspired by similar associations in the US and globally, EASL started as an informal network with annual meetings rotating across Europe. EASL has since then grown into a leading international medical association in the field.
