Kush Abeysekera is a consultant hepatologist and senior lecturer in liver disease epidemiology and public health, based between the University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Infirmary.
In 2023 the British Association for the Study of the Liver awarded him the Dame Sheila Sherlock prize for his PhD at the University of Bristol, exploring the prevalence and determinants of steatotic liver disease in young adults. Following this he was selected as an EASL-AASLD Masterclass Scholar. He currently leads the liver programme for the Children of the 90s birth cohort study, to explore the life course of risk factors for early liver disease development amongst adults. He is Divisional Research Lead for Medicine at Bristol Royal Infirmary and a local principal investigator on multiple clinical trials. He is exploring the characteristics of patients developing liver disease early and strategies to detect cirrhosis in the community proactively. His focus is on what is economically viable in healthcare to address liver health inequalities and how we can reduce barriers t engagement for patients accessing hepatology services.
